To help our country’s most promising young citizens learn firsthand the principles of our free republic guided by the principles of democracy, the Auxiliary promotes many patriotic youth programs, most notably American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation, held regionally and nationally, and the Americanism Essay Contest which is conducted in local school.

U.S. Flag protocol. The American Legion educates youths on U.S. Flag etiquette to build patriotism and create respect for the flag. The Legion provides education materials that cover a range of topics such as the proper ways to fold, display and dispose of U.S. Flags.
The Sons of The American Legion (SAL), created in 1932, is an organized program within The American Legion. It is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion. Each year, more than 4,000 high school students from across the country participate in the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. The contest began in 1979 to recognize up-and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth. View the 2018-2019 state winners or all the previous first-place national winners.

The George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest is open to high school students. You must submit an 800 - to 1200 - word essay discussing an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Essays will be judged on historical accuracy.

My upbringing in 4-H, Boy Scouts, and family has instilled a strong feeling of patriotism for my country and my flag. A patriotic citizen stands quietly when the flag is passing, the national anthem is sung and proudly says the pledge of allegiance.
